Accessible Travel Planners in Action: The Non-Profit Transition and Our Upcoming "Boots on the Ground" Missions

February 12, 20262 min read

As Accessible Travel Planners (ATP) converts aspects of itself into a 501(c)(3) non-profit, I want to make it clear that this wasn’t just a business decision; it was a commitment to action. We are moving beyond just talking about accessibility to actively creating it.

As we build our new foundation, we are focusing on four pillars: Education, Financial Aid, Advocacy, and—my personal favorite—Global Action.

I am so excited to share that we already have two major initiatives planned for this year in July. These aren't just trips; they are working missions designed to pave the way for travelers with disabilities.

A smiling couple using wheelchairs navigate an accessible area of a theme park with Cinderella Castle in the background, while staff assist nearby guests and an accessible bus is parked close by.

Mission 1: Disney on Wheels (Florida)

Florida is the theme park capital of the world, but navigating it with a disability can be a challenge. This July, a team of us, including our amazing travel planner on wheels, Ian and his wife Ann from the UK—will be traveling to Disney World and surrounding areas.

The Goal: To solve problems in real-time. We aren't just going to ride rides; we are going to document the friction points. What happens when a ride breaks down? How accessible are the "accessible" transport really? We will be there to troubleshoot, document, and create resources that will make Florida trips smoother for the families we serve.

Mission 2: ATP Hawaii Recon

Hawaii is a dream destination, but its geography can be tricky for mobility. In July, while attending our travel agency conference, the ATP team will be conducting a dedicated "Recon Mission."

The Goal: Boots-on-the-ground verification. We will be inspecting hotels, testing accessible pathways to beaches, and vetting excursion providers. We don't rely on brochures; we rely on experience. This trip will help us build a verified list of safe, accessible options for our clients.
